In YNAB, a little toggle arrow button appears in front of each split transaction (below, left) but each transaction must be individually opened or closed.
The Toolkit for YNAB‘s Add “Toggle Splits” Button setting adds a button in the toolbar that allows you to open and close all split transactions with a single click (below, right).
You can still open and close individual transactions using the default button in front of a specific transaction but the Toolkit’s toggle will override individual settings and provides universal control of all splits within each account. If some splits are open and some are closed, an initial click of the Toolkit’s toggle will bring all the splits into sync and subsequent clicks will affect all splits in unison.
Thank you for this! Question: Is it best practices to put the Payee name on each split line? Can’t figure out if this will help for finding the transaction using search or another function later or it is unnecessary.
Amy, thanks for your question. If you haven’t found it yet, the Toolkit offers an “auto fill split transactions payee” setting https://www.eshmoneycoach.com/ynab-toolkit/auto-fill-split-transactions-payee/
As I note on that page, I am not a fan of that setting. And to specifically address your question, No, I definitely don’t feel it is best practice to enter the Payee on each line of a split (assuming each line has the same Payee, of course). Adding a Payee to each line does not aid in searches or improve the general functionality of YNAB.
The exception (because I believe there are almost always legitimate exceptions to general rules) is if, visually, the lack of a Payee in a split continues to confuse a user. Don’t miss my emphasis on “continues.” 😉 I recommend that you leave Payees out of splits for a good while — several months at least. If your brain still hasn’t adjusted to the blank Payee lines of split transactions after that time, then it may be worth experimenting with adding the Payee on every line.
